Permanent makeup has been in existence for a lot longer than expected, for well over 5000 years. Archaeologist’s discoveries show physical evidence of permanent makeup being used as far back as 5000 B.C. with Egyptian women using colour cosmetics such as green ore of copper for eye shadow. There was also evidence of henna being used to dye hair, carmine to redden the lips, kohl to blacken the eyebrows, eyelids and lashes.

The Increase in Popularity

The rise in popularity of the procedure of using permanent makeup started in the late 1970s in the form of tattoo artists offering cosmetic tattooing. This form of tattooing later soon became referred to as permanent cosmetic, the more widely used term today. Other terms that were used to refer to cosmetic tattooing such as: permanent makeup, micro pigmentation and reconstructive pigmentation. Eventually, other professions became interested in performing and perfecting these procedures, among which that include aestheticians, electrologists and cosmetologists.

From that point on, the permanent makeup industry advanced and continually expanded, with training programs being established during the 1980s. When society became more aware of the range of different types of permanent makeup procedures, the industry more or less exploded exponentially.

Is Permanent Makeup Safe?

In accordance to the regulations of the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the procedure is very safe. This is due to precautions such as an installation of barrier film used to prevent any cross contamination reaching the client during any of the procedures. These preventative measures are supported by health organizations in both Canada and the United States. As long as the appropriate safety measures are followed when administrating permanent makeup, the procedure is completely safe and virtually risk free.

Choosing the Right Technician

Basing off of the safety of permanent makeup procedures, an important step in this is choosing the right technician. You want to make sure that your technician has all of the current credentials and follows the proper standard practices. For extra precaution, check to see if the facility you are planning to do the procedure in is a professional environment and has passed inspection by a Health Authority.

Permanent makeup has literally been around for over 5000 years and has reigned in popularity as being a popular substitute to applying makeup daily. Now thanks to a variety of skilled cosmetic tattoo artists, anyone would be able to apply any makeup look they desire whether it is for their permanent eyebrows, permanent eyeliners and permanent lip colour.
